HT. HILDA'S COLLEGIATE

Th* broakirijf-iip ceremony took place thin afternoon:—

Tho «f:hot»l report stated, inter alia: — Wo bnvii Dm honor to ttubmit thifl our 21at uriniml report. tit. Hilda'H bogAu its ojfnf.cnfto in th« Grango, Loith street, on February 2, 1896, with 10 day girls and 3 bwirdrrn i it enda itti 21st year with 130 pupibi, 40 til whom are boardora, all that our accommodation will allow. This year incrcanliijf numbent noto.-iflitatod further accommodation in house and school. In May a aocorid additional house was ranted in ifcriot row, which him provided class rooniii fw tho kindergarten and preparatory children, and nomo extra bedrooms. In npito of the inconvenience attached to fsmiwale houscD, tho arrangement prored u happy ono for tho little ones, and moat beneficial for the rest of the school, for an epidemic of whooping cough among tho kindergarteners did not affect tho boarders, who havo enjoyed excellent health. Howover, wo are thankful to have secured the adjoining substantial brick house, which will not only accommodate the inmates of the two cottages, but will provide us with larger play ground, on which we are anxious to nut another tennis court. For help towards its making we must thank Miss Grace and Mis 3 Lee, and the junior (school, for their generous gift of £ll 17s, tho result of their entertainment on Monday night. Early in the year, we welcomed Miss Langloy, B.A. (London), and Miss Sanderson, from the Edgbaston High School, Birmingham, and Miss Lee. Noxt year we hope to have the additional help of Miss Warring, M.A., of Canterbury College, and we look forward to a good beginning in February. Miss Glasgow, who in her three years with us has thrown herself so heartily into the life and interests of the school, has asked for a term's leave on account of health, which we readily granted. Owing to the uncertainty of mails, we had to abandon the idea for a Cambridge local centre, and instead tried New Zealand examinations. Girls sat for matriculation, Public Service, and intermediate examinations. Whether or not they prove successful is not of first importance: the effort they made will have good and lasting results. At the end of last year Hazel Cheyne and Natalie Hinson passed matriculation with Rolicitor'3 general knowledge, and this year the latter has also gained her A.T.C.L. The Divinity Cross presented by tho Primate has been won for the socond timo by Florence Small; it passes to Eva Allan, who is a close second. Rosamond Wood has the double honor of receiving both house and school honor medals. The prizes in the upper school are not awarded on a competitive system, but on a percentage of the year's marks—--75 per ceut. for form prizes. 80 per cent, for Biihject prizes—thus attendance, thoroughness, and consistent effort count more perhaps than actual cleverness, a fact which some girls with good ability have yet to grasp. The dux medal, which goes to the girl who gains the highest percentage of marks in the matriculation form, has been won by Eva Allan. Freda Roberts, however, coniing a close second. Our cooking class has been held at the Technical School, and we should like to express our appreciation of the kindness' and consideration we receive from the managers. Mrs Woodhouse has successfully carried on the drawing class in Miss Webster's absence, and the girls show keen interest in both drawing and painting. Miss Sanderson has revived the system of Swedish drill, and the girls have benefited much by it in their improved carriage and deportment. For the third time the Elsinore Cup has been won by Nancy Wright. Form 111. was the proud winner of the cup kindlv presented by the staff for the most efficient form drill. Games and sports have been an important feature of the life of the school, counting much for the health and happiness of the girls. We thank Mrs Charles Wood for tho beautiful silver cup to be given to the 'best all-round sports -rirl (Rosamond Wood is the first proud winner) and Mrs Balk for a handsome cup for junior tennis players (this goes for the first time to Virginia Nichols). Mrs Derisley Wood has also offered a trophy to be won by the j;irl j n the upper school who docs best work in history and literature through the vcar.

Professor G. E. Thompson, in his comprehensive annua] examination report, speaks very highly 0 f the work of the school. As usualj thoro was a large attendance at All Saints' schoolroom last evening, when the pupils of the Hawthorne Preparatory School and Kindergarten gave their annual entertainment. Miss Lees has to bo again congratulated on tho good work done by the children. The first part of the programme was made up of mueical items and dances, the youthful performers being attired in appropriate costumes. Tho spectacle -was very attractive, and the children acquitted 'themselves in a manner that reflected great credit on teachers and pupils. The audience expressed their appreciation byhearty applause. Items were contributed by Desmond Neil (welcome spesch), Stanley Mills (recitation); Edgar Smitlt and Colin Grav, Bessie Wilson and Nora Guthrie, Ella Campbell and Arthur Grav, May and Lily Stokes. Irene Sumner and Mav Stokes, Kathie Urquhart s.nd Mcllie Wilson, all pdanciorte dueto: while a children's play, entitled •' Little Brown Houses,' in which the pupils were admirably costumed, was pleasingly acted and prettily mounted.

Dr Riley presented the prises, and complimented Miss Lees and ber assistants (Misses Reid. Wallace, and Isitt) on tho success of the year, remarking that should the little students fail to turn out highminded men and women Miss Lees would not be to blame. In Miss Lees's work the element of patriotism was not absent. As in former years—since the war. at least—the proceeds of such concerts as the present were utilised for the purpose of affording healthy recreative outings for our soldiers in hospital. Last year £5 had been advanced for this object, and Dr Riley read a communication from Company Sergeant-major D. Stacey. at Walfcon-on-Thames. who wrote-on behalf of a number of comrades who had been fortunate enough to enjoy Miss Lees's hospitality, thanking the "donor for her sympathy. The speaker, on behalf of Miss Lees, thanked the many donors of prizes. (Loud applause.) The prizes were then distributed as follow :
