Second Lieutenant John M'Lean (died from sickness) was the only son of the late Charles M'Lean, farmer, of Hyde, where he was born and educated. When a lad of 10 he lost his father, and the management of the farm practically devolved on him. He became one of the most successful farmers in the district.' He enlisted for active service 18 months ago. He was one of the original members of the Maniototo Mounted Bides, and rose to the rank of lieutenant, which he held when the pressure of private business necessitated his resignation in 1913. For many years ho took an active part in sport, and was always ready to help any charitable cause. He married Miss Greer, of Patearoa, and there are two children.
LIEUTENANT E. R. BAXTER. Lieutenant E. R. Baxter (wounded) was manager of the Guardian Insurance Company's Napier branch. He was a Canterbury representative footballer. He was also a prominent member of the Canterbury Rowing Club, and took part in many regattas.
