On relinquishing, her position on the staff of Watson's Commercial Hotel, a large number of, her friends met last evening and presented Mrs Anderson (neo Miss K. Cassells)' with a handbag and a weJlfilled purse as a token of their esteem. The students of the commerce classes of the Otago University met at the office of their lecturer, Mr George W. Reid, to mark their appreciation of his interest in their work during tho 1917 session. Mr Taylor presented him, on behalf of the students, with a walking stick; and Miss M. E. Sinclair, on behalf of the lady members, with a silver, vase for Mrs Reid. Mr Roid fittingly responded. • Mr Rr'Triggs,' ex-Public Service Commissioner, and now Public Trustee, was met by some friends in tho Wellington Post Office Building with whom he had been most intimately associated during his term of office, and presented with a set of pipes and a.cigarette case, inscribed "Lest we forget." The presentation was made by Mr W. R. Morris, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department. Followers of cricket will regret to hear that Mr Harry Trott is lying seriously ill in Melbourne. The genial skipper of the 1896 Australian Eleven has many friends in Dunedin. His late brother Albert was coach at Napier. The death occurred on Sunday last ot her residence, " Glenburvie," Whangarei, of Mrs J. A. Baker, widow of the late Mr J. A-r'Baker. Born at Howick over 70 years ago," Mrs Baker had been a resident of New Zealand all her life. For many years she lived at Taheke, Holdanga, subsequently settling at Whangarei. The deceased lady leaves a large family of grown-up sons and daughters, most of whom are settlers in the North.
The Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) left for Invercargijl this morning. He will return on Monday.
