EMPLOYMENT OF ALIENS
THE NEW WAR REGULATIONS. It. is announced that the new War Regulations concerning the employment of aliens in working cargo on the Dunedin waterfront will come into operation on Monday next. Thenceforth aliens will not be employed unless they have written permits or licenses from the police to do so. As regards Dunedin, there are about 13 or 14 members of the local Waterside Workers' Union who will be affected by the new regulations. These belong to •various nationalities, including mainly friendly and neutral countries. " There are a largo number of men employed at Port Chalmers. Plain-clothes Constable Kelly is now making inquiries at Port, and, although he has not yet completed bis task, it is stated that the number ci men of foreign birth employed there totals about 60. " So far as can be ascertained, there are about 100 to 120 members of the Welling'ton Waterside Workers' Union who will be affected in regard to the employment of aliens. These men mostly come from neutral and friendly countries. In regard to the port of Gisborne, it is stated that there are about 150 men directly engaged in harbor work there, of whom some 50 or 60 are of foreign birth.
