Previous to 'the commencement of the ordinary business at a meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last evening the Mayor (Mr C. N. Scurr) made feeling reference to the recent death of Or C. J. Gore. Mr Scurr said the borough had suffered a great loss. The late Cr Goro bad been associated with tho council for many years, and at one time had occupied the mayoral chair. Ho was a man whose intellectual and practical knowledge had proved invaluable to the community at all times as far as the conduct of the borough affairs were concerned., From his experience of local affairs and his keen foresight m matters of policy, tho council had derived immeasurable benefit. His loss was a serious one to the council as a body and to the ratepayers, but it was a greater calamity to his widow and family. On the motion of the Mayor, the council dei Wed to forward a letter of sympathy to the lato councillor's family. As a mark of respect the council adjourned for 15 minutes.

Chaplain H. L. Blamires, of Trinity Methodist Church, Wanganui, who has been on active service in Egypt and France, returned last week to Wanganui. After the transaction of formal business by the House of Representatives last night feeling reference was made by tho Prime Minister, Sir Joesph Ward, and others to the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. A resolution appreciative of his public services and sympathy with Mr Ormond's family in their bereavement having been recorded, the sitting was adjourned till next day as a mark of respect to tho deceased. His Honor Mr Justice Sim loaves on Monday to take- the Christchurdi civil and criminal sittings. _ Colonel R, Heaton Rhodes, M.P., who intends proceeding to England on behalf of tho New Zealand Red Cross, will leave the Dominion soon after tho close of the session. Mr Rhodes oxpects to return in March. Mrs Rhodes will accompany him. Captain J. Graham (Wellington Infantry), whoso death from wounds is reported in another column, was some years ago station master at Lincoln (Canterbury), and vacated that position to go into active service.

At a meeting of the executive of the Utago Boxing Association! held last evening Mr F re a Foster was presented with a silver salver and a set of cutlery on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The partnership Messrs Roy P. Furness and «. Fuiness, proprietors o"f tho 'Marlborough Express,' has been dissolved by mutual consent, and tho business will an future be carried on by Mr R. F. Furness on his own account. Mr J. W. Henton. general mnnagsr of Kempthorno, Prosser and Co.'s New Zealand Drag Company, will retire after the annual meeting in Avri\ next, and is to be succeeded by Mr William Taylor, who has been manager of the Auckland branch since 1904. Mr Henton .joined the ori?o™ firm of H * nnd E * Youngman in 1854. When the Youngmans died the business was sold to Mr T. W. Kempthorne, trading as T. W. Kempthorne and Co. Later on the title was French, Kempthorne, and Co. Subsequently the partnership of Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co. S ■ l &n med ' and thafc Avas carried on till 1879, when it became merged into the company which carry the now-exist-ing title. Mr Evan Prosser retired from business, settled in Australia, and died there a few years ago. Mr Kempfchorne's death is of comparatively recent date. Mr Henton is the only living link between the company of to-day and the founders, and he has seen 53 years' continuous service, having never been in any other cmploy. In 1870 he was sent to Auckland to open the brancli there. He remained inn* l^ 31 * 1 for }' ears - and th <>n, in ISO 4, when Mr Kempthorne retired, Mr Henton was appointed general manager. Ho will have a seat on the board of directors; in all other respects ho will retire into private life, and, we hope, enjoy his well-earned leisure. Mr Taylor "his successor, has been in the company's' service for 26 or 27 years. Captain W. J. Hardham, Y.C., who is going to the front again, has resigned tho position of commandant of the Queen Mary Convalescent Home at Hanmer, and is succeeded by Major Clifton. Mr J M.
