ATHLETIC SPORTS MEETING

; ■ ■»■■ ' | A very successful junior sports meeting was held at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of tho Otago Centre, N.Z.A.A.A., in connection with the junior harriers of Dunedin. The weather was. fine and the track in good order; but a strong wind which was blowing was against the runners. Tho fields were satisfactory, and the quality of tho various performances was good. There w .'? I s , onl y a moderate attendance. The St. Kilda Band played a high-class programme during the afternoon. The sports were free to the public, and tho exhibition of several of the competitors warranted a much larger attendance. The meeting was managed by an enthusiastic band of sportsmen who have been associated with' local athletics for some years past, and several members of the Otago Caledonian bociety were also presont in order to obtain some idea of the fields likely to enter for the society's fifth annual schools' chamP*° n , s '»P sports to bo held on December 1. • . tne „£ om Petitor3 were under 21 years of a ge- Those, who stood out for most promising performances were M'Allen, Denser, and Harvey, and these lads should be heard of again in the athletic field, ivi Allen was responsible for a father remarkable feat. He came first in his heats in both 220 yards events, and also in the ftnals; scored a fino win in the mile: and wound up by winning the last Jap for his side m the Harriers' Relay Race. Some ot the teams in this event had their chances settled from the outset, the handicapper being much in awarding starts. There were nine competitors. Deaker gavo a fine exhibition of jumping, being the last in at 4ft 7in, and then going on to 4ft lOin. 220 Yards Handicap.—First' heat: L. M'Allen (14yds) 1, W. Storer (13yds) 2. Time, 26sec. Four starters. Lorimor won on the post. Final: M'Allen I,' Andrews 2, Lorimer 3. Time, 25sec. All qualified started. M'Allen won easily by half a dozenyards. Smith (115 yds), Lucas, and R. M'Donald (115 yds). C. M'Crorie (95yds) had joined this quartet when the bell rang for the last lap, M'Allen being 50yds away. The winner commenced a great -, run 220 yds from_ home, and finishing on in most' determined fashion he managed to- catch Lucas right on the tape, Anderson half a. dozen yards away third.
