BEFORE THE ATTACK.
ANTICIPATORY GERMAN ATTEMPT. HUNS’ SIGNAL FAILURE. GOOD BRITISH AIR RAIDS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter. LONDON, October 4. (Received October 5, at 9.15 a.m.) Sir D. Haig reports : The enemy heavily bombarded this morning our positions between Tower Hamlets and Polygon Wood (east of Ypres). The' German infantry then attempted to advance, but our artillery broke their attack on the bulk of •the front before it reached our lines. A few troops penetrated our barrage northward of the Ypres-Menin road, but our infantry completely repulsed, them, and our positions remain intact. There is a great artillery duel eastward of Ypres. , Our aeroplanes dropped eight tons of bombs on Tuesday, hits being observed on three aerodromes in the Courtrai area, and a fourth near Cambrai. We successfully attacked ammunition dumps near Douai and tho railway sidings at Eoulers. The enemy only attacked our long-distance bombing planes when far east of the line (i.e., far behind the German lines).
