SIXTEENTH ANNUAL y FESTIVAL. Pibst Day.— WsiifrHssDAY. - The sixteenth annual festival of the Dun»din Competitions Society opened this morning in Burns Hall. The official ceremony is fixed for this evening, when Mr Q. W. M'lntosh (vice-president) will be in the cAair. _ Mr J, P. Montague (of Auckland), the elocution judge, started bt 9.45 a.m. with tie recitation ' Claribel's Prayer' by lady amateurs. Qf the 24 entered 20 appeared, .■ad the judge selected for recall Miss Mona Thurston, Miss Monica Christie, Miss Elsie M'Peak, and Miss Vera White. The other competitors, were Mrs Sidney Smith, Mrs J. Black, Mrs Margaret Pearce, and Misses E. A. Josa, L. Small, E. G. White, A. R. Stubbs, Gladys Blaok. Rebecca Chambers, . Mary Hardy, Lily Foster, F. Mathews, Amy Dyer, Winifred Harris. Olive Jolly, and'Antonia Tesokner. Mr Montague was evidently pleased, for he remarked that the work was not only good, but surprisingly good throughout. Then came the pianoforte dnet for candidates 14 and under 16 years, the piece being Moaakowski's ' Valse BrillanteJ AH the candidates appeared. Mr Harold Gregson, (of Auckland) is the music judge, and he picked for recall Misses Ida Lungley and Elva Baker, Misses Neenle Kenny and Denny Gillies, and Misses Koa Oliver and Isabel Maxwell. The other competitors were :—Misses Mabel M'lvor and Marie Himmel, Misses Muriel M'Laren and Vera Brooke, Misses Hazel Bedford and Myra M'Kinlay, and Missea Gladys Benton and Irene Campbell. \ This afternoon the ladies' vocal solo and the bass solo and the hnmorous recitation for girls were taken. .We may have a line , in the Stop Press as to the recalls. ' The above society's official opening will take place at 8 p.m. this evening. A most attractive and varied programme will be submitted, and a packed house is expected. The programme includes piano duets, recitations, vocal solos (own selection), vocal solos (operatic), humorous recitations, and bass solo. JFhis should provide fine entertainment. To-morrow afternoon s pro- „ gramme should prove very attractive, and be the means of drawing a large attendance. .
