Officers of the Railway Department will learn with pleasure of the promotion of Captain W. Finns (late of the District Traffic Manager’s Office, Dunedin, and treasurer of tho Railway Officers’ Institute) to tho rank of major, as a result of good service in the field. At a special meeting of the North-east Valley School Committee held last evening Miss B. Ycrke, of the Awamoko School, was recommended ae eighth assistant teacher at the Volley School. Miss Downie Stewart, president of the Otago and Soutldand Women's Patriotic Association, returned to Dunedin on patriotic business. She leaves again at the end of the week for Wellington to represent the association at the Dominion Parcels Conference. Regular callers at tho Defence Headquarters in St. Andrew street will miss Mr H. G. Porteous, the chief records clerk for years—a most courteous and capable man. He has enlisted in the 32nd Reinforcements, and is now on leave. His place is taken by Mr A. Hawley. Major Andrew’s, director of organisation of military staffs' for New Zealand, is on an official visit to Dunedin.
