A Sydney cabla states that Jlf P. E. Winchcombe (managing director of Messrs Winchcombe, Carson, and Co., Sydney, and a member of the New South" Wales Legislative Council), who was a passenger by the Mongolia, died in Bombay as the rcsn.lt of exposure in a boat after the Mongolia struck the mine. Mr Winchcombo was a director of the A.M.P. Society. Mr A. A. Paaps,- who lias been managing the Waverley Hotel in Auckland during the last two years, has been appointed manager of the Grand Hotel m Dunedin. The Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) left ""this morning to spend a holiday in the North Island. Ho will return in about 10 days. Mr William Androw, whose death took place this morning, was a well-known figuro in the north "end of this City. Mr Andrew was (except for a few months in 1878, when he took a trip to the Old Country) continuously in the employ of the City Council since his' arrival in" Dunedin from Glasgow in 1875, and was at the time of his death ward3man in Leith Ward. He was born in Bishopsbriggs, near the Scottish capital, in 1854. Ho was connected with the Ancient' Order of Foresters, being a Past Chief Ranger of the Court Pride of the Leith. Congratulations to our respected fellowtownsman, Mr S. Jacobs, who yesterday attained his 70th birthd.nv. A P.A message from. Wellington states that Mr Sydney Johnston, a well-known Hawke's Bay sheep fanner, and an elder brother of 7 the Hon. C. J. Johnston, Speaker of the Legislative Council, died in England on Friday last.
