GRANT FOR Y.M.C.A. BATHS.
TO TOE EDITOR. r, ;rJ notsce <hafc a deputation from ths Y.M.C.A. waited on the City Council on Wednesday last, asking for a grant of £IOO per year.. To force their argument, they brought in tho question of baths, stating that they had lost quite a considerable amount on their bath owing to the council establishing a bath in the City. I wish to point out that years before the Y.M.C.A thought of building a bath tho question of a. City bath had been considered. It is absolutely foolish of tiie Y.M.C.A. people to ever dream of running their little basement pool as a (My bath. Besides, the Y.M.C.A. institution is itself a private concern, and, to my mind, is ran to suit a large number of highly-paid officials. It is the biggest piece of impertinence I ever heard of for them to ask the. council to grant £IOO to aid thorn, using tho promised help to soldiers as a cloak. Am sure tho ratepayers, knowing what improvements are wanted in the City, and especially the water in the Public Baths, to over think of consenting to pay tho Y.M.C. 100 pence, let alone £IOO, would be monstrous. If tho Y.M.C.A. are running tbeir batli at a loss, let them close it down; it is not wanted as a public bath. Personally, I do not think the council are justi- *£?, , m granting tliis donation to th< Y.31.C.A.—1 am, etc., t no Fair Pla *- Juue 28.
