FEDERAL ELECTIONS

LABOR FOSTERS CONSCRIPTION BOGY. WOMEN INTERVENE AGAINST " SHOUTING.” Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian arid N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, April 27. Both sides are putting all their strength into the Federal Election campaign. The main issue, which has largely swamped the bickerings of the now divided Laborites, is the attempt of one side to reincarnate, and of the other to effectually lay, the Conscription ghost. The Political Labor League advices insist that, once election is over, the country will be free for another Conscription referendum. The Liberals as loudly disclaim any such intention. Both sides, however, are up against one solid trouble: A women’s movement is in full swinn; in the shape of a chain letter, binding tn© recipient to write or wire the respective candidates to pledge themselves to anti-shouting legislation, also to cab public meetings and otherwise stir up things with the same object. Each recipient is asked to “pass it on’’.to three other women. The postmen are already feeling the weight of tins chain. ADMIT NO GERMANS. MR HUGHES’S VOW. MELBOURNE, April 27. At an election meeting, when asked if in the event of a British victory, whether the Germans would bo allowed to enter Australia, Mr Hughes replied that it depended upon what party was returned at the elections. If he were returned to power the Germans would certainly not be admitted. [Mr Hughes is standing for Bendigo.]
