The Trades and Industries Committee of the Otago Expansion League met last evening. Mr J. Blair Mason occupied the chair. Messrs J. IT. F. Hamel and Mason were elected as the committee’s representatives on the executive. The secretary road a lengthy letter from the High Commissioner (Sir Thomas Mackenzie) concerning the manufacture of tungsten from scheelite and wolframite. Messrs Mason and M. C. Henderson agreed to get further information concerning the prospects of the establishment of an electric smelting plant for tha manufacture of tungsten and molybdenum. Mr Rhodes suggested that the committee, should collect information regarding the possibilities of the establishment of such industries as that of the manufacture of calico, rabbit furs, union cloths, linens, hessians, linoleums, and the manufacture c£ a finer variety of flax. A discussion regarding the utilisation of waste products and the manufacture of byproducts also took place. Tho secretary was instructed to secure copies of a number of leading scientific journals.
