The Admiralty reports that the shipping arrivals for the week wore 2,585 and the departures 2,621. Forty vessels of over 1,600 tons each and 15 of under 1,600 tons' each were sunk. Twenty-seven other vessels were attacked without success. Nine vshing vessels were sunk. ONE PEST LESS. ustraiian and- N.Z Cable Association. NEW YORK, April 25. Advices from London state that the captain of the armed American steamer Mongolia says that on April 19 ho fired at a submarine which was preparing to attack the Mongolia at a range of 1,000 yards. _ The periscope was hit, and the submarine was undoubtedly sunk. BRITAIN’S OUTLOOK. SEVERE ECONOMY IMPERATIVE. Reuter’s Telegrams. LONDON, April 25. In the House of Lords tho matter of food limitation was debated. Lord Devonport (Food Controller) said he was impressed with the necessity for a reduction in the consumption of bread to 41b a head weekly. The consumption of meat had been considerably reduced. Ihe sugar allowance must be reduced to slb weekly. It would depend on the people’s conmmption of bread and other foodstuffs within the next two months whether compulsory rationing would be necessary, and he gave warning that in the meantime the necessary machinery was being organised. He declared that if diminution was not accomplished the country could not get through to next harvest except with severe privation.
