THE TURF

[Gossip iiy Old Identity.! So far as wo can see at present the D.J.C. Winter Meeting in June will go on. but tho nominations are postponed till tho 10th inst. The position is not too certain. Nobody can toll what tho Tyranny of tho West Coast may do. Marsa and Thaddeus are hone the worse for their recent racing. Dave Wilson has in hand a half-sister to Thaddeus. She is by Rokeby from Jessie Beware, Jessie Lewars is a Stepniak marc. She was sent to Sydney for sale, and nobody bid for her. A chance thrown away, I should any. Ikowai will not run any more on this earth. As a result of Ida injury he was shot a few days ago. Mr W. G. Stead’s horses, Sasanof, Shrill, Sweet Coni, and Chaloma, were shipped this week to Hawke’s Bay, where they are to be trained. Murray Hobbs retains charge of Kilboy and Kill ’Em. . It is stated 'that the Wellington Cup winner Bunting is under order to race in Sydney, and will be shipped across tho wafer by the first available boat. Mr George Morse, the handicapper, is reported to be very ill in Auckland. J. O’Shea failed to add to his winning record at Trcntham. “Sir Lancelot” notes that A. Reed’s three wins brought his total up to 56, within three of the Aucklander, and three ahead of J. Olsen. B. Deeley increased his number of successes to 45," and he is still fifth on the list, five behind C. Emerson. The death of the late Mr John Gubbins’s first Derby winner, Galtee More, is announced in ‘ Deutscher Sport ’ of Ist February. The son of Kendal and Morganetta, who was 23 years old, was being transferred from Grad it z to tho Union Stud at Hoppogarten on 30th January for stud duty. In being unloaded he got his hind legs between the box and the side of the dock, with the result that he sustained injuries which tyere evidently severe. The chief veterinary surgeon had him conveyed on a sledge to the stud, where he was put in slings, in the hope of saving him for further stud service. That, however, was found be impossible, foi on thorough examination is was ascertained that the upper part of his leg was broken beyond repair, and he was destroyed the same evening. Sydney trotting men are talking of the performance by Maorilaud in winning the Thousand at Victoria Park on the 12th inst. He started at 50yds behind and at an outside price. He is by Ribbonwcod from Miss Fritz, by Huou Junior. Heavy rain fell continuously on the last day of the A.J.C. races at Randwick. How Qreencnp (English-bred) won the Cumberland Stakes is thus stated in the ‘ Referee ’ : On his Sydney Cup running Green Cap appeared to' possess but little chance of downing either The Fortune Hunter or Ulva’s Isle. Qhantemerle was pulling hard in front of Colbert for about a mile and a-quarter, but was quickly in trouble when tackled by the latter. Colbert was joined by The Fortune Hunter rounding the bend, and when the latter tired Ulva’s Isle and Green Cap moved up. With a smart run Green Cap put the issue beyond doubt nearly a furlong from home, running a very much better race than in the Sydney Cup, in which, however, the going was hard and the pace solid from the commencement. The Fortune Hunter, with his Sydney Cup win fresh in the minds of buyers, did not get beyond 600gs when offered at auction at Sydney. If he had gone into the ring the clay following that success ho would have touched a much higher figure, but his two subsequent failures in w.f.n. races depreciated his value. Thumbs Up (who is said to be about 14.1) and Bandolier each cleared 6ft 6in, the high jump at the Royal Agricultural Ground, at Sdvney, In another competition Thumbs Up jumped 6ft 2in, and as he also cleared 24ft 3iu in the water jump (being beaten by Behuore, 25ft 6in) ho is something quite out of the common. Woorak,-who ha? retired from the turf, won just over £17,000 in stakes for Mr L. K. S. Mackinnon, which is not a bad return for a horse that cost only 500gs as a yearling. During his career Woorak, who proved himsoU, one of the fastest horses ever seen in Australia, won 11 races.
