MISS BARTHS PUPILS
Tiro pupils of Miss Violet Earth gave a vocal recital in tho Bristol concert hall last night. Tho guests were too many for tho accommodation. Fifty or more had to stand, and draughts wore suffered gladly lor the sake of purifying tho air - . That there should be such a thing is a testimony to the high vahu* set on Mies Barth’s tuition, and the fact that practically all who attended the recital staved to the end shows that it was interesting. Wo may safely go a step further than that non-committing plirnso. and avouch with gratitude that tire pupils sang well. One point generally commented on wag tho excellence of tho girls’ enunciation. All uttered tho words clearly ; two or three, specially Miss Agnes Goudov and Miss Edith Payne, were as distinct in speech as it would bo poe-uildo to be in an elocutionary recital. Another important feature of the performances was that tho senso of the songs had been well studied. They were given meaning. May wo also be allowed to express satisfaction in regard to the music chosen for tho recital.' The flower song from Gounod's ‘Faust,’ that brilliant, test song. 1 April Morn,’ the air from ‘Ernani,’ Mascagni’s ‘ Ave Maria.’ the avanera from ‘ Carmen.’ the gipsy's song from. ‘ Trovatore ’ —theso are all standard compositions. It was a pleasure also to renew acquaintance with the old favorite ‘II Bacio,’ and the examples of modern composition were all of the sterling order. As to the singing, it of course was cf varying merit. Some of the pupil? are ready for concert work, others are likelv to come out well in their finishing studies, and just as promising are those who may never shine on the platform but may give pleasure by the fireside. Tuition such as Miss Barth imparts is of value all through one's life. Tho performers were Miss Elsie Macdoupall. Mho M.nllie Dowling, Miss Elizabeth Smith, Miss Agnes Gnuvley, Mbs Victoria Balk, Miss Ethel •Ichuetone, Miss Margaret Gawne, Miss Lena Geddes, Mies Edith. Payne, Miss Lottie Scott, Miss Doris Gascoigne, and Miss Leah Burt, The accompaniments were plaved bv Mur Elsie Macdougall and Mrs Bcwlev.
