SCHOOL COMMITTEES

The monthly meeting- of the Macandrew Road School Committee was held on Tuesday evening; present—-Messrs G. F. Bewley (chairman), D. Cunningham, A. W. Duncan, A. E. Tichener, and J. Riley. The head master reported that the roll number for the first week was 624; 62 new pupils were enrolled. Never before had the school opened with so many pupils on the roll The Second Standard consisted of 130 pupils, and the accommodation of the class room was taxed to its full capacity. Though 40 pupils passed through the Sixth Standard last year, this class has a roll number of 54 pupils. Great difficulty was being experienced in accommodating such a large class in the room. Additional accommodation would have to be provided for this class to carry on their work. Mr M'Lennan and Miss Lynn had been appoint'd pupil teachers, and one probationer had also been added to the staff. The Works Committee reoorted that the school grounds had been top-dressed during the: holidays. Feeling reference was made to the death of Inspector C. R. Richardson. A motion of condolence was carried, a copy to be forrvarded to Mrs Richardson and familv. Messrs G. F. Bowley and D. Cunningham "‘ore appointed a visiting committee for the month. The monthly meeting of the North-east Valley School Committee was held last evening, the following being present; Mrs Begg, Messrs Sinclair, Mitchell, Bardslcy, and Caldcr (chairman). The Chairman expressed the committee’s deepest sympathy with the family and relatives of the late Mrs Jos. Arthur, who was a member of the committee, also to the wife of the late Inspector Richardson whose valuable services in the interest of education are well known. The Chairman also spoke of the sad loss the cause of education had sustained by the death of Dr M’Nab. The head master reported enrolling 55 new pupils, also that all the pupils of Standard VI. had gained their proficiency certificates. Olive Aburn and Raymond Vivian gained junior scholarships and 28 pupils passed either the matronal scholarships or the junior free place examinations. The resignations of Messrs Arnold and Mowat were accepted with regret. Messrs Elliot and Little were appornted members of the committee.
