First Day,—Wednesday. The weather was overcast all day, with occasional drizzles and a few showers. Tho course did not' cut up appreciably. The sad outlook overhead kept many away, and though there was a fa-ir attendance, it was the smallest ever seen at Wingatui on Oup Day. The totalisator handled £18,137, or £5,785 less than on Cup Day last year. The following completes our report— AD P RENTICES’ PLATE, of lOOsovs; second 2.sovs. tiiird lOsovs. 6f. 5—J. B. 4 J. Elhs's Benefit bv Beueform—luvicta, 8.1 (R. H. Ellis) 1 1 0. E. Wise's Ardmore, 9.10 (J. Olr-cn) ' 2 SJ. A. White's Placid, 8.9 (A. Also ran: 7 Kilbrogan (8.12, W. OTInlloran), 6 Bore (8.7, F. Benefit led from Placid and lan Hamilton, Ardmore and Hot Air next. Ardmore improved his position after three furlongs. Benefit led into the straight, lan Hamilton next. Hot Air came last on the rails, and was challenging inside the distance when he fell and interfered with everything except Benefit, who got home two or three lengths to the good, Ardmore beating Placid half a length. Svlva was lourtn. Boro next. Time, Imin 523 sec. NOTES BY OLD IDENTITY. Plymouth’s run in the Hurdles was his first attempt of the kind in the Dominion. He shaped well for a mile or more, then faded cut. Glenthorpe failed to stay, and Kilmeny never looked dangerous. Golden Rupee did well for a beginner. Cast Iron won on his merits. Palamon lost his chance .of the Gladbrook Handicap at the outset bv bavin? to make up a lot 0 f lost ground Gaxmeau was said to be. sore. She shaped as though that were true. Dorian looked safe inside the distance, but Partisan staved the mile better. There is no doubt that the judge made a mistake in placing Aaland third. Aaland was lying last when Winglf rm over the rails. Whipcord rnaliv finished third. ~ • Gamecock won the Champagne in fin? style He had to be at it all the wav, hrst to head Ample, then to stall off Ki‘lmeedy. Ho is well named, being trulv game, and a fine reachv colt. By the way, in from' the course yesterday Kilrush was named as second. The taie of the race stated that Kilmeedv had that place, and such is the fact. I. E. Jones, who rode Gamecock, has had a fine run in the Dunedin Champagne He was on Husbandman in 1903, Sharnshooter in 19J9. Counterfeit in 1911, Brown C\’. i in 1912, and yesterday’s win lii.A fourth in succession, as he rode Angelina in 19i4, Adjutant in 1915, Good Hope in 1916, and Gamecock in 1917. The public rushed Rorke’s Drift for the The investments on him came to 8206 more than those on Bee. But hs could not see it out. Some of the South landers stick to it that Hogan’s stable would have had a better show'if they had started Golden King. My opinion is that neither could have had any chance to beat Bee. She outclassed the lot. Nicely handled by Olson, -Mr Taylor’s mare came _when she liked, and won anvhow. Ringlorm ran a good solid race, and Snub after being badly placed la tho - ar U stages, was shaping well at tho finish Araenvhor ran m patches, 6 o did Wishful ./■Ain Barleycorn ran badly, and finished Mavgerinc did fairly well United Bar vice did not bleed as the result of his efforts.

Sir larka showed speed now and acrahi in the Apprentices' Plate. Kilkce led" ail tho way, and paid the best dividend of tho day. The country-bred Loehelbj, ran a solid race.

Dave Wilf-on came near to landing a coup with Marsa in the Publicans' Handicap. But for .Miss Do Val having the iuck to creep up on the rails at the home turn Marsa would have won. Wrestler who started almost as gocd a favorite as Miss De Val, got into a bad position, and never emerged. Sir Malt was also in a bad place early in the race, and finished verv fast.

Jack Olsen rode the- winning double, and got a cheer in recognition of the feat.

t Mohawk was the disappointment of the Stewards' Welter. He dropped away verv suddenly. The three placed horses came ri-ht down the long straight abreast. H. Lowe, who fell with Hot Air in' the Berwick Handicap, was the lad who fell with Wingform earlier in the day. He seemed to get a nasty shake up the' second time, but no bones were broken, and when Mr James rang up last ni-ht he learned that the lad was recovering consciousness.

London has in peace time a foreign population roughly estimated at 300,000.
