MINING.
The Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge re* sumed work on February 4, and has since been engaged in opening up a now face on the western side of the cut. Bottom had not been reached at the end of last ' week, so. there will probably not be a wash-up this week. No. 2 dredge had had a number of repairs effected while waiting for a top tumbler, which, should ivach the- dredge to-morrow. •-■"-■ The llising Sun Gold Mining Company, Owharoa, have crushed 227 tons of or»for a return of bullion valued at £590 2s lOd, and treated 175 tons of tailings for bullion worth £277 8s 7d. This makes a total yield of £BG7 lis. sd, or an average of £3 15s 9d per ton. The return for January last was £BBS 18s lOd from 198 tons.
The following cablegram has been sent by the Waihi Gold Mining Company to their London office:— "No. 12 level: The west cross-cut has been extended to 640 ft west of No. 4 shaft. North-west cross-cut : At 589 ft west quartz 18in wide was intersected, assaying at 7s per ton.. Its course is 65deg true, and its dip Lin 6. South-cast cross-cut: Tho drive on tho Dreadnought lode east has been extended 27ft, from 168 ft to 195 ft ■ east of No. 4 shaft north-west cross-cut, and is worth £1 14s 6d per ton. The reef is wider than the drive.
The following is a copy of a cablegram sent last Thursday to the head office of the Waihi Grand" Junction Gold Company, Ltd., in London, from the Auckland management :-—" We are crushing 400 tons of ore per 24 hours. The extraction is 35s per ton. We do not intend ; tr> clean up until February 24. No." 8 level :_ The drive east on the lode cut at,; 116 ft in the south-cast cross-cut has /beeri advanced to 134 ft. The average value for a width of 54in is 6s'3d per ton. Th« south wall is exposed. The drive vest has been advanced to 100 ft. The average value for a width of 40in is 9s 6d ge«' ton. Both walls are exposed. Empire f ootwall branch lodo : The drive west has : been advanced to 70ft. The averago valua _ for a width of 50in is £1 12s 5d per ton. The south wall is exposed. A cross-cut at 60ft west has been put into the north,. For a width of 13ft the quartz assays £? 0s Id per ton. The north wall is not ta hand. The. east drive has been advanced to 85ft. The averago value for a width of 65in is 13s 5d per ton. The south wall is exposed. No. 8 rise has been put tra 20ft. The average value for a width oi j 49in is £1 6s Id per ton. The south wall is exposed. No. 1 main shaft: The pumping compartment is now down 1,355 ft.i
TALISMAN EETUBNS.
During the broken period of Januaij the Talisman Consolidated Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 783 tons oi ore for a return of bullion valued at, £6,23-5 9s sd. Compared with the return for the corresponding period of last year, when 1,365 tons yielded £6,523 2s ldj this shows a decrease of £287 12s Bd. Tha ' costs for the past month totalled £5 18« 7d por ton, made up as follows:— Min« development £2 4s 6d, mining £1 10s 10d, nulling £1 6s 4d, general expenses 10s lid.
