ATHLETIC UNION

The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Centre of the Xew Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union was held last evening, Mr A. Pohvorth presiding. _A letter was received from Mr° A. M. Wyhe (secretary of the Fort Molvnenx Caledonian Society! stating that J. Wayte, of Otamita, had' competed at the sports meeting, held on January 1, and won the 880 yards race, and hop.s'tep and jump and the high jump. Wayte had not put in his performances, and the Molyneux Committee had not paid over the prize money, and were waiting a reply from the Otago executive concerning the matter. The majority of the competitors were making their first appearance. The writer said that he understood Wayte had consulted a solicitor in regard to the holding back of the prize money. The question of YYaytes action was discussed at the previous meeting of the executive, when ho was disqualified on the ground that he had handed in an incomplete nomination form. Wayte and another competitor named Sim were brought before the meeting last evening, for the purpose of making an explanation on their own behalf. A lengthy inquiry was held concerning the running of these two competitors at the Port Molvneux Society's meeting, at tho conclusion of which it was decided to endorse the action of the Port Molvneux Caledonian Society in impounding the prize money won by Wayte, who was cautioned. In the case of Sim, the same decision was arrived at, this competitor agreeing to return the money he had won. The secretary of tho Otago Caledonian Society wrote stating that thev intended to hold a sports meeting on March 17 the proceeds of which would be devoted towards the funds of the Soldiers' Club. Ihe professional events in the programme would be light-weight wrestling and running (100 yards and 220 yards).—The society were granted a permit.' Mr Campbell moved that the central body be recommended to give its favorable consideration to the removal of the present disqualification on A. Thomson, a returned soldier. It was mentioned that J-homson was disqualified for an offence in the JNorth Island several years ago.
