The Secretary of the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce wrote 'asking support to a resolution asking the Government to utilise prison labor in making and maintaining tho mam arterhd "roads of the Dominion. The chamber pointed out, among other tilings, that in other countries where prison labor was utilised for suoh purpose the work had proved beneficial to the prisoners themselves, morally and phyeically, and splendid roads had resulted". The dearth of free labor made the present time opportune for tho utilisation .of prison labor in the making and maintaining of roads.—The committee recommended that the suggestion of the Rotorua Chamber bo endorsed.—Mr Alexander moved that the matter be held over for a month, so that members might have time to coneider the question fully. The Secretary of the Marlborough Automobile Association wrote stating that several of the unions were starting or had already started a scheme of mutual insurance, but they were of opinion that a comprehensive and mutual scheme of insui> ance based' in the New Zealand Union would be by far the bettor arrangement, as it would be cheaper for insurers and would offer better security with less personal liability. The association asked for assistance in urging that a meeting be called at an early date to have the matter diecusjsed thoroughly.—lt was decided to reply that the club were of opinion that it was a matte.: which should emanate from the New Zealand Union. The Secretary of the Teviot Motor Lorry Owneis' Association wrote asking co-opera-tion in the matter of improving the! road from Beaumont to Roxburgh.—The action of the committee in voting 3gs was approved. A letter from the Waikouaiti County Council in reference to the Kilmog road provoked a long discussion, it being terminated by the president offering to'interview Mr Orbell on the matter. The_ Secretary of the Taieri County Council wrote asking the club to assist in the matter of endeavoring to have motorists drive with a reasonable speed on the Green Island Brighton road, otherwise the council would feel it incumbent to review their decision to open the road.—Mr Ansell suggested that a reply bo sent to the council stating that the club were in sympathy with them, and would circularise members in the desired direction, but suggested that cases which came under the notice of tho Taieri County Council ehould be referred to the police.
