HARBOR BOARD
Tlie* monthly meeting of the Otago Harbor Board was attended last evening by the chairman (Mr B. C. Hazlett) and Messrs J. M. Dickson, M.P., J. Loudon, D. M. Mawson, T. Scollay, H. E. Moller, and J. H. Walker.
The bank balance certificate disclosed a net credit of £5,187 6s 7d.
The clerk of the Waitomo County Council wrote conveying t.ho resolution of his council with respect- to discontinuing the voluntary system of enlistment, and asking the Board's support.—Mr Moller said, seeing that the Government, were doing (heir best in ’egard to recruiting, he moved that the letter be received.—Carried.
—Standing Committee.—
The following matters brought down by the Standing Committee were passed: The enmmitee recommended, with respect to the letter from the South Island Dairy Association urging the necessity for erection of cool store for cheese at Port, Chalmers, that the matter stand over till next meeting, in the meantime members to visit the present, works at Port, Chalmers. With respect, to the application of J. Hutton (second engineer on tugs) for an increase, that, his wages be increased to £2O per month. That tenders be called for the annual supplies for 1917, in accordance with the recommendations of the resident engineer, the tenders to be opened at a special meeting of the board to bo held at 2.20 p.m. on the day of the December Standing Coramitec meeting. With respect to the joint report of the resident engineer and harbor master, that the resident engineer be asked; to report to next Standing Committee as to the cost of installing Wigham lights in the whole of the harbor; in the meantime Die recommendations with respect to the fights at Quarantine and Goat Islands to be given effect to. With lec-pect to the letter from) Miller Bros, submitting offers for repairs to slip in connection with dredge Progress, etc., that the enginer submit a report to next meeting on the No. 3 proposal made therein; in the meantime Miller Bros, to be asked to submit a tpecification of the work proposed to be done under the offer mentioned. . —The Revenue.—
The Chairman said they would be pleased to see that, notwithstanding the present trying iimes, the revenue during the past nine months showed an increase of over £7,000 as compared., with Dio' same period of last year. This year the revenue had amounted to £74,305, but £1,50Q was included in that amount for the sale of the Kop-iia.l For iho same period of last year it came to £65,124. The increase this year was very gratifying indeed in all the circumstances.
