Every Scotsman takes an interest in this celebration which, in the Old Land, used to bo the occasion of much mirth, ami very often of much joy, to those who knew how to appease tho spirits that were about at that eeasqn. The Bums Club have done much to iovivo the old customs during late years, ami they will celebrate the occasion on the 51st inst. with a very fine varied programme of Scottish, patriotic, and humorous items in the King’s Theatre. PAGEANT PLAY: ‘THE SWORD,’ The pageant play to bo perfoi-med in His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday and Friday next promises to prove a most interesting one. It represents three periods of Great Britain’s deliverance, and is very appropriate to the present tune. In the prologue tho British fairy, Morgan-le-Fay, is roused, from her age-long sleep by the dream of Britain’s peril, and seeks a means to help her. In the first scene we see the last survivors of a British tribe, wild and untutored savages, but full of a dauntless courage and undying devotion to their queen Boadioea. The second scene tells of Alfred, cne of the greatest kings our land has. ever known, as the deliverer of England from the fury of the Northmen, as an upholder of learning, and a wise lawgiver. He will he remembered with Jove and gratitude to all ages. The scene shows him in the moment of victory, acclaimed by his people.. In tho third scene the people of “ Memo England ” are preparing to meet one of the greatest invasions thatever threatened our shores—the coming of the Spanish Armada. This scene, a typical incident of tlie times, shows the magnificent leadership of Queen Elizabeth and the whole-hearted response of the English people. Over 150 performers will take part in the play. Tlie orchestral portion of tho programme will lie supplied bv the Philharmonic Society. Tlie first half-hour will lie taken up by Miss’ G. H. Gardiner and party. The box plan is now open at The Bristol Piano Company, and tickets may be obtained at S. Jacobs’s and Brown’s Exchimro Tea Roomm
