QUEEN’S, The new star picture at the Queen’s is a photo-play based on the well-known by Thomas Hardy, ‘Far from the Madding Crowd.’ It is a most interesting torsion, produced by Mr L. Trimble, who was responsible for the staging and screening of ‘My Old Dutch.’ The story is tnat of a country girl who has inherited a tann, and who has many suitors in consequence. Amongst those suitors is a neighboring farmer and an English officer. Ihe latter is a bad character, but he cajoles the girl into marrying him after a courtship lasting but a few days. Soon afterwards, however, he is confronted with proofs of a disgraceful episode in his past life, and disappears. The neighboring farmer referred to threatens to shoot the officer should they ever meet again, and carries out the threat when the latter is driven back to his wife through lack of money. .aventuaUy the girl marries her first- lover, and all ends happilv. ‘Far from the Madding Crowd ’ is, a fine play, and the acting of Miss Florence Turner leaves nothing to be desired. An excellent supporting programme includes ' i comedy (‘Trilby Turns the Tables’) and a topical Gazette. THE SCARLET SIN. His fashionable wife is an admirer of Richard Alien. man of leisure, with whom she eventually elopes, after some highly dramatic domestic incidents. For a- time she lives gailv in Tans, but retribution follows. Slic is believed to be identical with another woman who drowns herself, but- she returns to see the wedding of her husband to Edith, Erie’s ward. The, distracted mother is ablr to save her child from an accidental fire, as a result of which she is fatally burnt, but before dying ,‘s forgiven by Eric, Edith being unaware of the return of the other woman. ‘When in Romo’ (comedy), ‘Great French Advance on the -Somme,’ a Topical Budget, and orchestra! selections assist to make a fine- programme. The emotional photo-play ‘The Golden Lotus ’ continues to draw patrons to the Plaza. ‘The Spider’ will be screened at Everybody’s until the end of the week. ‘A Child of the Paris Streets’ is proving a strong attraction at the Octagon Theatre. The usual change of programme will be made at the King Edward Theatre tonight, when the leading feature will be ‘The Kleptomaniac’s Redemption. ’ The Quicksands of Society ’ and Charlie Chaplin in ‘ Hie Property .Man * are tire headliners at the Grand Theatre. ‘The Final Judgment,’ an elaborate Metro drama, is the star film .at tile Empire Theatre.
