DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS

Everything in connection with.the dernon-fite-s.tion concerts has panned out as the committee wished. There was a full house at the first of these concerts, and the second, given last night, gathered <i crowd that could hardly squeeze into Burns Hall. Mr J. H. Walker, vice-president, occupied the chair, and thanked the public for so generouslyrallying round the society this year. The society had anticipated: a loss, but had thought it only fair, in the interests of the teachers and also of performers, to hold the competitions as usual. He trusted the result of the whole session would be that they ■would be able to clear themselves without making a loss. He thanked the uerformcrs, , and paid a tribute to the invaluable secretary, Mr E. S. Wilson. He expressed their grateful thanks also to Mrs Montague, who ™« actedaa official accompanist ever since the inception of the society, and to Mr Towsey, the stage manager. The programme presented was varied and interesting. Piano duets were contributed by Miss Roma Baker and Master G. A. Bowron, Misses Nellie .Varaey and L. Geddee, and Miss Olive Brown

and D. MTntyre; piano solos by Misses Jcs- ] file Christie, Euby North, Ruby L. Hudson, Neeny Kenny, and Lena Geddes, and Master I (x. Stoneham; songs by Mrs J. Cbventrv ! Mrs E. Cameron, Miss Alma Lefevre, Messrs i - O. Firkin, G. S. Newton, and R. H. Sib- I thorpe, and Master Olive Vivian; the reciters ! were Misses Molly Hudson, Bessie Thomson i Flo Gow, and Audrey Eagar, Messrs J. b' ■ M'Connell and W. J. Alpress, Masters Richard ' Beck, William Pickard, Ralph Vivian, and! Norman Scurr. Two items were sung t>v the Students' Choir, under the baton of' Mrs Harold Browning, and Master Max Levy contributed a violin solo. One of the successes of tho evening was the amusing doll du»t rendered by Misses Flo and Jean Lennox ■ The side drum solo hy Master Ralph Ben- '■ fell, of the High Street School, was much I appreciated. j
