BURNS CLUB

The Dunedin Burns Club held their monthly gathering last evening. Mr W. B. M'Ewan (president) referred to the arrangements that were being made for the celebration of Hallowe’en, which this year would take a modified form. He stated that the committee had decided to purchase £IOO ivorth of war certificates, that‘being the largest number they could at present afford. The October meeting would toko the form of a children’s night in orjer to encourage the yoimg folk. After touching upon the war and the part that women were playing in connection with it, the president gave some details of a sale of Burns's manuscripts held recently in London, when six MSS of poetical and prose compositions realised £903. All these would find a resting place in Scotland—(applause)— three of them having been acquired by tho trustees of the Burns cottage at Alloway, and two of the other three had been purchased by a. Glasgow collector. On tho same day a. copy of the subscription hill or prospectus of the first edition of Burns poems, published in 1786, realised the top price of the sale, being sold for £275. A copv of ' Waverley,’ by Sir Walter Scott, as publ-aned in three volumes at £1 Is in 1814was also sold,jand it brought £l5O. ’ Musical items were contributed by tho following riper Morrison (bagpipe selection), Mr D. Kirkpatrick, Miss D. Walton, and Mr H. P. Desmoulins (songs), Mr K. Webster (recitation), Miss Kathleen Carter and Mr 8. G. Angell (songs), Miss K. Carter and Mr H. I lb Desmoulins (duet), Mr A. M'Crorie and |Mr L. H. "'Stewart (songs). Several part songs were also rendered bv tho choir, under Mr J. Paterson. Miss E. Wright played the accompaniments.
