CROMWELL NOTES
The season continues vvith remarkable mildness, and both in the Avay of rain and line Aveathe-r eclipses anything known for many years.
The local Progressive League have apparently been concerned of late regarding the reported disposal-—or negotiation in “that direction—of low-lying land on Mount Pisa run to a. private company. Quite recently an assurnncG was received from the- Minister of Lands that there was no record of any such negotiations. If there is one thing more than another on Avhieh local bodies now keep a close rvatch, it is land settlement, and any disposal of areas which, is not considered in tho best interests of the district. Hawea residents are hoav up against the authorities in the subdivision of a run near Lake Hawea, which it is claimed is being carried out at variance with the proposals placed before the Classification Commissioners. A fund is being raised to send a deputation to Wellington, if necessary, in order that tho unanimous local opinion will be adopted.
Riponvale a.ud its surroundings present a busy appearance. A great deal of Avork is now being carried out cn the orchards, both by settlers and the company, and one cannot fail to admire the clean stale of the plots. Work proceeds steadily on tho big scheme at the river, but of course in this progress cannot bo rapid.
The Cromwell branch of the Patriotic Association met on Friday, Avhen a fair amount of business was transacted. The branch has recently been gathering infoixna'iou regarding Government assistance to poorer sofdiers successful at ’and ballots, and has received intimation that a soldier avoulc! bo assisted fo the extent of £SOO. Another important question discussed at the meeting was tho opening of two blocks of land -nt Ardgowan for discharged soldiers. The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Commissioner to confer with the Minister, with a. view to having men on active service eligible also, copies of tho resolution to be forwarded to. the Cemmispouer, Minister, and member for the district.— Oavu cor'-ce-pondent, September 3.
