THE HORRORS OF WAR
A WORD TO NEW ZEALAND
FROM A SOLDIER IN FRANCE,
[Special to the ' Star.']
CHRISTCHUECH. August 19.. A sou of Canou T. A. Hamilton, of Fendalton, writing from France, says : "l.ou talk of Anzac Dav, and how people seem to have already "fdrgotten. Good heavens! The people of New Zealand haven't the faintest notion of what war is-like. If they could see the horrors of it, if they oould see civilisod women and children blown to ' smithereens,' as I have, why, there wouldn't be a man left in New Zealand who could carry a rifle. These poor people you are not helping at all are doing our share. Thev have all lost husbands and brothers, and yet they are fighting still. If you could onlv witness the fear in which" they hold the- Germans. ... Many have seen atrocious
tilings, and yet we read in New Zealand papers that recruits are not coming up fast enough. Why don't the women do their bit? Let them do without the sJackors to play around with and make them do their hit. Every weekly paper that comes has pictures of plenty'of men standing about amongst women at some beastly carnival or other. Oh. it makes a fellow sick. Strafe them all !"■
