UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The Vice-Chancellor (Mr Jolm Roberts, C.M.G.) presided at the monthly meeting of the Otago University Council yesterday afternoon.

The Finance Commltee reported that the tender of J. Wilkie and Co. at £SO (and blocks £1 each) had been accepted for printing the Medical School booklet. The Trustees, Executors Company had written asking for the sanction of the council for the expenditure of £33 10s in repairs needed to houses in the Beverly Trust proper!}-, aud the council were recommended to agree to this expenditure. In reference to the Batchelor memorial fund, it had been resolved to apply for subsidy on the amount contributed, and to authorise the chairman to invest the fund, together with a further £IOO from the scholarship and prize fund account.—Adopted. The Works Committee reported that a progress payment rif £1,966 had been passed to Fletcher Bros. The Director of Education wrolo in connection with the application of a returned soldier for free medical education that tho Government were unable to comply with the request. This matter and the principle arising from it had been cent on from the Senate for the consideration of councils.— Mr J. C. Stephens said that though tho Government could not consent to what might lay them open to unlimited liabilities of the same land, they might perhaps offer a limited number of bursarie’s, which could be competed for, such bursaries not necessarily confined to medical education. The further opinion was expressed that help might be obtained from patriotic associations.—lt was resolved that in the opinion of the council such requests could only be met cither by a system of bursaries or by assistance from patriotic associations.
