DUNEDIN-WAIKOUAITI ROAD

Tha Otago Motor Oluib, among their many activities, have for some time past been endeavoring to have the Main North road between Bunediri and Waikouaiti put in good condition for motor traffic Yesterday a deputation from the club, consisting of Messrs Ansell, Wilson, and Moody), waited on the Waikouaiti County Council in regard to the matter. Mr Ansell explained in detail the condition of tho road, and concluded by stating that on the basis that two miles of Mount CargiU-Waitati road required to be thoroughly metalled with an average depth of 3in of metal over a 12ft formation, £SOO or £6OO would have to be expended, and another £250 on the Waitati-Killmog section. A total expenditure of nearly £I,OOO would bo necessary between Dunedin and Waikouaiti to put the road in good working order. While the Motor Club were willing to do all in their power to help the council, they considered that it should be tho duty of the Government to provide for the maintenance of all main arterial roads. The deputation were not in a position to pledge the club to a definite amount, but would support the council in a manner consistent with the resources of the club. Mr Wilson said he was satisfied the Otago Motor Club would find £l5O towards the work of putting the road in a proper state of repair, and if the council would find a similar sum they would have a fair amount to start with. Then, with a £ for £ subsidy from the Government, they would have a substantial portion of the estimated cost of placing the road in thorough order. ' The Chairman of the council (Mr A. S. Orbell) expressed pleasure at the spirit in which the Motor Club representatives had approached the council, and after discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Kilpatrick, seconded by Cr Laley—"That tho deputation from the Otago Motor Club, having been heard on the necessity of having repairs effected to the Main North road, from the southern boundary to Evansdale, this council resolve to apply to the Government for a subsidy of £ for £ on £SOO, this council being responsible for £3OO of this amount, and will depend on the Otago Motor Club for £200."
