LATEST VERDUN ATTACK.
BIG EFFORT FAILED. FRENCH REGAINING GROUND. GERMAN ACTIVITY ON VOSGES FRONT. BELFORT BOMBED. PARIS, April 18. (Received April 19, at 8.55 a.m.) A communique states : We have partly expelled the enemy from the Chauffour salient. Enemy aeroplanes bombed Belfort, doing slight material damage, but inflicting a few casualties. ° Tlie High Commissioner reports. London, April 18 (5.'45 p.m.) -.-The French official report says : On the left bank of the Meuse there has been a bombardment of our first lines between Morthomme and Cumieres. On the Tight bank of the ■Meuse the night has been comparatively calm. It is confirmed that the German attack launched yesterday on our positions between the Meuse and the xegion of Douaumont assumed a character of extreme violence. From fresh information it appears that this offensive action was delivered by troops belonging to five different divisions. East of tho salient of Chanffour the enemy had succeeded in penetrating our first line of trenches, but they have since been partly repulsed bv our counterattack. In the Woevre there has been an artillery duel in the Monlainvillo sector. South of Ban de Sapt a German Tecon.naissanco attempted to approach our trenches at Hermanpere, north ox St. Die It -was repulsed with grenades. Last night an enemy aeroplane threw seven bombs,'- including an incendiary ■bomb, on Belfort. Three, persons axo reported killed and six wounded. Material damage unimportant.
