A JOVIAL LEGACY

"I have frequently noticed gloomy looks dispelled by the simple expression *' Have a drink, old chap?'" In these words David Louis, a member of the London Savage Club, began a memorandum in which ■ho made a unique bequest to some of his fellow-members. The bequest, which, was one of £650 to provide free drinks for members of the Savage Club, was contested in the Chancery Division, and "the Judge decided against it. The memorandum went on:

Now I should like to be able "to say

this (" Have a drink, old chap?") to some brother Savages for ever, and therefore 1 have directed in my will that a sum to yield £26 a year be placed at the'disposal of the benevolent fund for that purpcSe. This will enable a few Savages to have a drink or smoke with Louis every day, to be consumed by himself, to the extent of not more than 6d any one member per day 5 a day to start at 2 p.m., and at the closing of the club for the day any balance from day to day may be added to that available for the nest day, the distribution of mementoes, that the legatees should be invited in email parties, and refreshments be provided.

In the City Police Court yesterday afternoon James Henry Williams Gould/ 19 years of age, charged with stealing postal notes and stamps, total value 14s 2d, the property of the New Zealand Government, was remanded until Thursday, and was handed over to the custody of the Rev.
