COPENHAGEN, April 16. Ihe municipality of Vienna is summoning a conference of representatives -from the- cities of the Danube to consider the question of the construction of a canal from the Rhine to the Danube.
N lie proposal is evidently a German one, as the Danubs traverses Wurtemberg and Bavaria before entering Austria. ' The source of the Danube at Donaueschingen. m Baden, is only about 20 miles distant from the Rhine after the latter issues from, Lake Constance, hut the upper waters of the -Danulio are regularly frozen over every winter. Since as fai-i back as 1844 the Rhine and Danubo systems have been connected by the Canal, which iiiu-crscK Bavaria, and unites the Altmuhl ;a tributary of the Danubo) with the Main (a tributary of the Rhine).]
A statement of tho Wellington City Council's finances for tlip past year ehow'fi that the- receipts were £248.856, and the ordinary expenditure £244,691. Tho receipts from rates totalled £175,270, rents £38.055, and water account £17,367. The expenditure on .streets, drainage, and lighting absorbed £72,234. The city funds show a credit, of £15,069 this year, as a.aintu a debit of £23,612 for the previous roar. The sinking funds total £327,204. educing the public debt to £1,953.046.
