" Kiroito," while in sympathy with the railway servants in their claim for an increase of wages to meet the enhanced cost cf living, suggests the. establishment nf co-operative si-ores. *l'o start a cocperative storo in Dunedin that would stand £50,000 would be required, to be rair.ftl by £1 shares; and a lease of the Market Reserve is suggested if the Citv Council are agreeable, failing which the Harbor Board should be approached. Branch etores could he established in different parts of the City, and the cooperative business could be subdivided into departments—grocer, builder, baker, boots, mercery, etc.—the whole concern to be under the control of a first-class commercial man, assisted bv a staff of clerks. The idea- is commended* by the writer to the notice of the Trades and Labor Council, and the support—moral and material of the Socialists is claimed. He says, .in conclusion: "Recently I noticed iii the newspapers that a Wellington city councillor is to propose a resolution that the Government should provide a trawler for each of the four centres. Well, if' the Government will not, that could be another plank in tho co-operative movement. Plenty of fish at a moderate cost is unknown at present."
