Y.M.C.A. WORK

TO-MORROW'S APPEAL

Arrangements are well forward for tho street collection to-morrow.

The general secretary of tho Y.M.C.A., Dunedin, has received tho following letter, which speaks for itself:

Tho inmates of the Wnikouaiti Convalescent Homo desire to place on record their appreciation of the work of tho "i.M.C.A. nmongst tho troops in Egypt. T\ e noticed your appeal for money in the paper on Saturday, and wo wish you every success in your endeavor to obtain money to enable you to carry on the splendid work your association ara doing for tho soldiers. Tho following httlo incident illustrates to what practical use tho money you receive is put to :—" Somo nineteen hundred Scottish troops were expected in Alexandria from Cairo, and as they were moving on next day no camp was prepared. Tho Y.M.C.A. peoplo wero approached, and they willingly worked all night preparing a good meal for tho men, and then waited on them when they arrived." Thousands of men who were not partial to the Y.M.C.A. prior to the war now appreciate all that tho association are doing for them when they are in foreign lands. Wishing you every success, V, o are, etc., Sergeant L* Harrison' Joxes, Private 11. Woot,fokd.- Farrier J. Gctxaoiikr, Sergeant R. ,T. Forms, C. H. Watson-, D. M'D. Cirencn, T. D. \ ALEXTIXE, A. B. GIIJB.

The following i s taken from a letter written by Sergeant J. 11. Tempero, dated February 10:—The site of the present rrunp_of tho Australian and Xew Zealand Division offers little possibilities for amusement of indoor nature. Certainly it is in close proximity to a town, but this town being out of bounds for tho major portion of the day and night, and not-be-ing possessed of any means of providing entertainment, is not worth considering. The camp is bounded on three sides by tho desert, and on a fourth bv tho canal, and has been in evidence but "little over a month. It was to this place—Jloaskar as it is now called—barren of the lea=t d"preo of comfort, that tho A. aud X Z Biv]?on came when tho Peninsula was evacuated. It was hero thev sought amusement after their strenuous'tasks and found none. Tho sito of tho camp had no sooner been agreed upon, however, before various societies, striving to outdo one another in their efforts to attend to the mental and moral welfare of the troops, descended upon it with all their paraphernalia ot kindness and comfort, and helped very considerably to brighten tho lot of the weanod soldier. Perhaps no society has done as much for the troops as the Y.-M.UA. and it is to tho opening of their new building at Moaskar that I wish to draw special attention, with the hope that their efforts may bo stimulated bv the knowledge that what they have done Vr ? T % f]o,n ? is appreciated to the full. J lie building m question is well ever 100 ft Jong and about 40ft broad, and is substantially built with rush sides and felt covering on the roof, thus making it a cool retreat. At one end is built a commodious stago with ante-room eminently suitable for concerts, etc. Forms provide seating accommodation for about 600, and the remainder of tho space is devoted to tables for writing or reading, tho necessities being provided by the association. It is a building that will bo invaluable as loii,t; as the camp is in evidence. The night of Wednesday, February 9, 1916, was set apart for the opening celebrations, and _thougn. it was not at all a clement evening tho spacious building was filled to overflowing. General Godlev performed tho opening ceremony, and spoke of the very great debt of thanks that was due to the 1...1.L.A. for providing such a macnihcont unilding. All could see what °a rii.eiidjcl place it would bo for recreation, -ho I.M.UA. were always to the fore in doing anything that made for the welfare "J < ° \ roo P s - Tho many buildings the had opened at Zeitoun and lieiiopoiis, where camps had been previously, had proved a boon. Ho had a deep respect and affection for tho men of the -New Zealand end Australian Division, and ho was pleased to bo present at the opening of such a fine building designed f O ~ their benefit. General Godlev, in declaring tho building opened, thanked Mr U';lop, the secretary, and tho Y.M.C.A. for what they had done and wero doiiy for the soldiers in Egypt. The building will doubtless bo invaluable to tho troops in camp at Moaskar, who have learnt bv experience to appreciate tho good work of tno i.M.L.A. .May the association meet with tno prosperity it deserves.
