“ REGULAR CASUALS.” [Special to the ‘ Star.’] WELLINGTON, April 12. The Minister of Railways stated yesterday that he intended to make a recommendation to the_Cabinet regarding the “regular casuals” of the Railway Department, who were the subject of a petition which had received the favorable consideration of the Parliamentary Committee last session. His proposal was that in cases of casuals who were ineligible for appointment to the permanent staff when they first joined the service, or who, although eligible in point of age had been unable to pass the examination necessary to qualify for their permanent appointment, leave on full pav for certain periods would be granted the" men if their services were dispensed with through no fault of their own after they had completed at least 10 years’ fixed service. The periods of leave would he six weeks for from 10 years to 15 years’ service; eight weeks for more than 15 years’ service. The new regulation will provide also that a regular casual whose services are dispensed with under its provisions may he granted, one privilege ticket per month for himself and his wife for a specified journey at one-quarter fares.
