OTAGO BOXING ASSOCIATION

The eleventh annual report of the above says : The committee have had an exceptionally quiet year to record so far as the sport of boxing is concerned. In common with other sports, boxing has been greatly affected by the war. Only two amateur tournaments wore held during tho year, both being for patriotic pnrjKiseK. The large number of boxers offering their services for the front marie it appear to tho committee undesirable to bold any other competitions. For a similar reason tho championships were abandoned. The direct interest of the association was not confined to boxers who left to fight tho battles of their country. Anions; the local medical gentlemen whose, services were accepted was Dr O’Neill, who had held office as president of the association, and who had in many ways rendered valuable service to the sport. Tho committee feel certain that all those at the front have the best wishes of members, and will be gladly welcomed on their return. Tho association suffered severe loss during the year through the deaths (all on active service) of G. Herbert, W. Boroham, A. Larnont, and E. Torrio (competitors}, and G. Browning (member). Financially, despite the loss over the competitions, the year was fairly satisfactory. The committee desire to thank Drs O'Neill, Roberts, Batchelor, Lindon. Julian, and Evans, also 'Messrs S. »S. Myers, P. lloincril, and J. Foster for services rendered, and tho various donors of trophies. 1 u conclusion, it is highly gratifying to record that practically all our prominent boxers have enlisted. With regard to the future the committee cannot speak with certainty. The war continues to have an influence on all sports, and members will have an opportunity of discussing Hie whole position at the annual meeting. The membership for the year was 94, as against 95 the previous year.
