WANTED, A MOTOR AMBULANCE

TO BE NAMED THE “EDITH OAVELL.” In December last the f editor of this journal addressed to the dhairman of the Hospital Board a letter in which he set forth the desirability of emidating here the example of many places in tho British Empire where it had been decided to erect a permanent memorial of tho splendid heroism of Nurse Cavoll. Our proposal was to set up a suitable memorial tablet in the new Nurses’ Home. The matter was considered by the Charitable Aid Board at their January meeting and warmly endorsed. But the hoard have asked us at the Same time to bring under the notice of our clientele the need for providing the [Hospital with the equipment of an up-to-date motor ambulance—which shall bear the honored name of Edith Cavell—for the transportation of fever and like cases; and having satisfied Ourselves that this request is a reasonable and nroper one we have pleasure in acceding to it. The sum of a trifle over £4OO is require! to carry out both projects; and we feel Bure that the people of Otago, with their Wonted liberality, will make a generous and prompt response. It is intended to encourage local enterprise by obtaining most (if not all) of the material required for the construction of the ambulance within this district, and we can assure our readers that not one penny will he disbursed for .the support, of those who have made a parade of their hostility to the glorious cause of the Allies for which Nurse Cavell wasproud to Lay down her life in the same spirit that animated the martyrs of old. We shall be very pleased to take charge of any subscriptions that may be sent to us. We ask our readers to remember the hppositeness of the Latin adage which says that he gives doubly who gives quickly. We would dearly (iko to have the satisfaction of closing down our lists within ONE MONTH from the date of issue of the present appeal. s.
