SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The Mosgiel District High School Committee held their monthly meeting last evening, Mr J. Williamson presiding. Mr Henderson's resiauation as a member <'i committee, he having removed to outside the school district/was received. 'I he Borough Council wrote, asking that the committee make good some damage done to the ceiling of the Coronation .Hall at the last school concert. It wac explained that, the damage was done accidentally, and it was resolved to ask the council to make the neeessarv renairs at the expense of the committee. The Education Board notified that intimation had been received from the department that only one class of "ood attendance certificates would in future be granted to all pupils who had not been absent <"rom school more than five half davs during the year. .IhcboaM also notified that Miss Keys, filth assistant in the Mosaiel School, had intimated that she would be married shortly to a teacher who had been accepted tor military service, and that she desired to continue in her position after marriage. lie board bad informed Miss Keys that t.iey offered no objection to her proposal. Ihe board forwarded a circular relating to subsidies on voluntary contributions, aid asked the committee" to avoid endorsing claim* unless they weic fully satislKd that the expenditure was essential. J. üblie funds, as far as possible, should not oe nvade available for other than the most reeessarv works, and the department relied upon them to co-operate with the Government in this and other ways m cilect inreasonable economies. Moreover, on the score of experience tee committee's nominee's claims were not. comparable with thofe of quite a- number of the other applicants. Mr Logan submitted a very satisfactory balance-sheet in connection" with the school's concert. After bearing a report on the use made of the gymnasium for drilling, etc.. by the Defence authorities, it was resolved to interview local officers to obtain particulars before taking any further action :n the matter.
