—-•—♦ MOTOR SPIRIT AND KEROSENE. [Special to thb * Stab.'] CHRISTCHURCH, February 1. A further rise in the price of motor spirit and kerosene _ takes effect from today, the increase being Is per case, except in respect of power kerosene, where it is 6d a case, and illuminating kerosene, where it is Bd. Both the big wholesale firms trading in Christchurch—the Vacuum Oil Company and the British Imperial Oil Company (New Zealand), Ltd.—have made the same increase in their prices. According to the - information furnished by several motor and oil firms, the main reason for this further rise is in the continued increase in freight rates between New York and the Dominion. In normal times the freight on motor spirit is 45sper ton. About four months ago it had risen to 755; then it was increased to 105s; and to-day it Is at what one dealer described as the "absolutely impossible figure" of 155s—an increase of 244£ per cent. The price of tin and solder has also gone up considerably. To-day the price of ordinary motor spirit to the consumer in Christchurch is 17s, whereas at the beginning of the war it was from 14s to 14s 6d.
