—Musselburgh Quarry and Works.— Mr B. B. Couston, engineer, reported that Messrs Seddon and Rothwell had signed the necessary agreement for the working of Musselburgh quarry, and it was bow before the council for signature. Tho Engineer stated that the contractors had misunderstood the definition, of fine screenings, and he had allowed them to delete the item altogether. The contractors also stated that they would have difficulty in getting plant in working order by December 51, as the acceptance of their tender' had been delayed, and had been informed that the council woidd place their order for material. In respect o; crushed material, - reasonable time would be given for erecting plant, but. thecouncil would go elsewhere for screenings required for concrete work ■;■ this were started .-before ' contractors were able to supply. It was provided in the specifications that notice would be given the contractors on or before the 16th of each month what material Was required for the following month. The contractors wanted to know whether the council would keep them going with spauls and rotten rock till they got- the crushing plant installed. The're were two localities where this material might be used. First, in Musselburgh, where there were a number *i" small balances to credit of streets: and there was Gourley street, if the council decided to adhere to original schedule. Secondly, there was Forbury crescent He had previously expressed the opinion and still believed the storm-water drain on south side and kerb and channels both sides should be conr-tructed before any other work was undertaken in this street." But he could, if necessary, lay out the channel on north side and pitch halfway across the load in a similar manner to that followed in Driver street. It meant twice laying out the same work mid made it- more difficult to place the boards when the channel was being (.■.■instructed, and necessarily added to the cost ; but tho work would practically absorb all the white, stone at the top (if the quarry, and as the Drainage .Board did not apparently knew themselves whether or when tho storm-water drain in this street would be proceeded'with, it might be advisable under the circumstances to authorise the work as far as he could conveniently arrange. With regard to the other quarry products, he recommended
".hat orders be placed for completion of metalling in Royal crescent .'did quarry dust ior blinding that street .throughout., for steernings for kerb and channel "work, and for screenings and l£in metal for balance of asphalt required this season. Archie Eros, had been instructed to clean ii]) the material quarried and be out of the quarry on November 50. e-o that it couid be hrnded over to Seddon and Eothwel! on December 1, as provided in the agreement.
