' The fortnightly meeting yesterday evening: was attended by Mayor (Mr T. Scollay), Crs Anderson, Stevenson. Isbister,' Love, . Lightbourne, Williamson, and Powell. —The Passing of Our Pioneers.— The Mayor referred to the recent death of Mrs William limes, who was a pioneer and respected member of the community, owl was also Mayoress of the town for several terms. the council decided to convey their sympathy to'the relatives of the deceased lad v.' also to the relatives of the late Mr Dugald M'l.iieldan, who arrived at Port Chalmers in the' ear'.v sixties. His son, Mr J. MT.achlan, is a member of the. Borough Council. ■ —Correspondence.— From the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board submitting a statement, showing that two Contributions from the council had yet to be paid in respect to the cottage hospital in terms of an agreement made when the hospital was erected.— Preferred to Finance' Committee.
From the Department of Internal Affairs stating that the Minister was prepared M include. Cnrev Bav within the noundan- of the boroueh," and asking what_date would be suitable for making the {iteration.—Resolved that the beginning of the present financial year would bo the most suitable time. From, the Chief Postmaster. Dunedin, •acknowledging receipt, of a petition for the erection of an additional posting, box and an earlier delivery of letters in certain streets, mid stating that the ix-ti-tion would be. submitted to the consideration of the Secretary.— Received. From the Minister of Internal Affairs enclosing copy of a warrant pre«eribing the manner of rendering the borough bal-ance-sheet available for" the inspection of ail ratepayers.—Beeeived. —Reports.— The Works Committee tenoned thai, the streets and channels had been attended to as usual durine the past fortnight; grass had been rut in several street plantations, and grass cleared, from a number of sidetracks'and paths; iootpatha_ had been repaired niid asnludt patching done in Daly street, Uai rinqton street, and Bernicia "street; the uradius and asphalting of Cunie street' corner was completed; the ruts filled in ai Maeandrew road and the Onieterv road, and some metal spread on the hill.r road. The. matter of the inoraiie was being considered, and a full report would be submitted as soon as possible. The lisbtintr of fires on the tip was prohibited, also the riding of bicycles on any footpaths within the borough.—Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the oast fortnight amounted to £529 13s Bd. and expenditure to £237 19s Bd.—Tho Chairman" said the financial position was £2.000 better than it was at the same time last venr.—Bcport adopted. Tho Finance Committee further reported that, the forestry work for the past fortnight had been jioeiu- and weed • Hie. in the nursery and coniinniu" the erection of the fence on White's" late property. The committee recommended i'rnt tenders be called for erecting the fences (labor only) for the subdivision of the Cemetery Reserve—viz.. portion of boundary fence on the upper road and two division fences. Tenders to be in for next meeting.—Adopted. —Removing and Re-ereetinu'.—
A petition signed bv 44 householders in the vicinity of Lain!' street was received asking "the council to m-obihit tl-e removal of two old cottages 'from Scotia ?treet and the re-c-rectioirof same at the corner of La.ing .street, as such a proreeding would bo detrimental to the town for .several stated rea.-ons. Tho council should pass a by-law to nrevent the removal and re-ei-ectic.ii of old wooden .house?.

AV. Platts on his aprjoint.ment as Commissioner of the Cook" Islands, and to wish him success in his new sphere
