Mr Justice Heydon, of the Arbitration Court, has issued a statement regarding the alarming pituatiou created bv the rapid decrease of the parohaßing value, of » sovereign aft'ectmg the living wage.' In his judgment "in February, 1914, he directed, that wages should liuctuate according to the purchasing value of a sovereign. It then cost 23s 6d to purchase v.-hat could be bought in normal times for 20s. Xov." it would cost 23r, Id' to make the same purchases, increasing' tho. living wage from 48s to 635. Mr Justice. Heydou has now decided; that the resultant increase in tho cost, of living cannot be met by increased, wages, and the obligations of "wage? boards under the clause, nvust be suspended. He has referred the matter tr> the- Government.
