CROMWELL NOTES. -Milling in the immediate locality is still practically confined to a. few dredges on the Clutha. Electric No. 1, on the Kawarau, is affected by a high river, and returns are only equal to expenses. After ii long run of big returns Shine Xo. 1 h«s for the past two weeks been on very poor ground, the lieh lead of wash having cut out suddenly. Reports at the end of last we-ek weie that there were again signs of an improvement, but a, marked change will be necessaiy to produce returns equal to the »ecent "high average. Shine Xo. 2 is v/innm- a, little better than expenses. Rising Sun is jiow getting a fair cut straightened up at the lower boundary, but although frequent rumors are heard of expected big returns these are not substantiated by results. Nevertheless, there is reason to believe that very payable returns will be forthcoming in the near future. _ A few days ago" the Roaring Meg Hydraulic Company commenced "baling out tiie paddock, and within a, month the fa to of this enterprising company will possiblv be sealed one way or the other.—Own correepondent, November 22.
