A HOAX
A, effort time ago the German people were rejoicing over a piece of ugm-s according to which the British, troops had suffered a crushing defeat in the Sudan at the hands of the natives. The commentaries attached to this in the German Press meant no less than the beginning of the end of the British occupation of Egypt and the shaking of the foundation of the British Empire. The ‘ r gratifying ” news appeared first in a leading Berlin paper, and was then duly propagated in the neutral Press by the Wolff Agency.
In the Inst few days, however, according to the ‘ Wiener Aroeiter Zeitung,’ the author of the news has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment and 300 marks fine before the Criminal Court of ‘Dresden, ithaving been proved that the report was entirely a product of this man’s fancy. He had posed as a fugitive from Egypt, and had offered the “ well-written ” account- to the Berlin paper, which bought it eagerly for 300 marks, as also did the Wolff Agency. Later on it was found out that- he had never* been in Egypt, but that he was a swindler not unknown to the German notice.
