A prisoner effected a rather novel escape from custody at the Christ'-him-li police station on Friday night. Ho wa« arrested in this City on a cliaige of the theft of £BO from a boarding-house in Christehurch. and was escorted from here by Constables Bandy'and Todd. On arrival at the Christ - church police station with another prisoner, and whilst the walchhouse-Ueeper was engaged noting the property found on one of the prisoners, the prisoner from Ihinedm requested permission to use the lavatory. He was taken to the lavatory by Countable Shuelian, who remained outside. Subsequently it was found that the prisoner had escaped by means of a window in tho lavatory. lii.s name is Thomas Williams, and he is 21 years of age. a laborer bv trade, and a- native of Xew Zealand. In response to a suggestion addressed to the director of the Dunedin School of Art (Mr -11. llaweridge) by His Worship the Mayor [~S\v .T. -J. Clark), the students and staff of that institution ait- just nowbusy designing a series of eight large posters, which are to be placed in prominent positions throughout the City, with a view to .stimulating reciuiting. Some of the sketches have already been prepared, and give promise of something particularly striking —something that should help in no small extent to bring before tho young men of Dunedin the fact that they should, if fit and free, be serving their King and country.

The Employers' Association of Dunedin. being not altogether satisfied with the present progress of recruiting, have deemed it advisable, for the purpose ot ascertaining the position and the names of men who are apparently eligible to serve th-e King, to approach the Defence Department and ask for a list of all the -eligible mov. -so far left We understand that if the Defence authorities supply such <-i list the employers will go into the. question thoroughly, and see if something cannot bo done.
