CONCILIATION COUNCIL
The shipwrights' dispute, which has been in abeyance for a. long- time, was before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr Hally) at Wellington yesterday. Th,.points, in dispute are wages, overtime, th-j wages of apprentices, dirty work, and suburban work. It was stated that if the wages could be agreed upon there would be. no difficulty in arranging the other matters, Ths union had previously offered to accept the Dunedin award, with) pay at. tho rate of Is 7d per hour, but the. employers would offer no more than Is (3d, which is being paid at- present. The union assessors claimed that they were entitled to at least the same rate a-s the Dunedin workers, and tho practice in the past had been that they should receive more than carpenters.
Sincei no compromise could bo effected the question was referred to the Arbitration Court.
