IN WEST FLANDERS.
BELGIAN PREPARATIONS FOR RETREATING ENEMY. LONDON, September 22. Mr Donohoe (correspondent of the 'Daily Chronicle'), telegraphing from Courtrai (West Flanders), says that storms have made the roads difficult for transport. The flat country is a quagmire. The new heavy guns bronght up against Termonde stuck in the mud. The Germans are inadequately sheltered, and are suffering from exposure. Uhlan cyclists are active in South-west Belgium, "raiding the main roads and sniping travellers. Belgian patrols are hunting down both these marauders and German fugitives from the fighting line north of France. The Belgians are preparing a warm reception for the German right if it is driven back. West of Charleroi the Germans have mined various roa<ds leading to Brussels, and taken other precautions against a forced retreat. MORE ATROCITIES. LONDON, September 22. The 'Daily Chronicle' says:—"An eye-witness's sworn statement reveals the most brutal massacres. At Tamaines there is only one house in the town imbnrnt. The Germans selected 432 inhabitants, gave them time for confession, and then killed them with mitrailleuses. They included an aged burgomaster and his two young daughters, and prominent citizens. The rest of the inhabitants were forced to bury their fellow-citizens."
