MR APPLEBY'S DEATH

[Special to the Star.] MILTON", September 24. The inquest on the body of Mr W. B. Appleby, late head master at Lovell's. Flat, was continued at Taieri Ferry last evening before Mr J. W. Petxie (actingcoroner) and a jury of four, Mr Amos M'Kegg being foreman. Evidence was given by John Knarston, who discorered the body floating in midstream about 200 yards from the Taieri Ferry bridge. Malcolm M'Lcod. a brother-in-law of the deceased, gave evidence of identification. He said he had assisted in the search for the body. The deceased was a total abstainer. He was never better off financially, and had no difficulties to contend with. Witness considered deceased last man in the world to commit suicide. His family life was quite happy. Evidence was also given by Hannah Appleby (the widow), Dorothy Frances Elizabeth, (a daughter, who had travelled with her father on tho evening of his disappearance), Constable Fox, and Sophie> M'lntvre (school teacher, Owaka Valley, who last saw deceased alive ab AHanton station). ' 'The whole of the evidence tended to show that deceased was in a normal state. of mind, and. had no worries, financial or otherwise, and no cause to commit suicide. A verdict was returned that Mr Appleby was drowned in the Taieri River, but that there was no evidence to show how ho got into the water.
