A Wellington P.A. wire states that the Harbor Board hist night made two provisional appointments to the pilot staff. The new pilots are Mr J. Spence, promoted from the position of ' dredgemaster on the dredge Whakariri, and Mr Alec Davis, chief officer of the steamer ATahura. Gopnthic, s.s., sailed from Port Chalmers yesterday to continue Homeward loading at Auckland. Arrino, s.s., reached Port Chalmers this morning from. Bunbury via the Bluff with sleepers and jarrah timber. Bhe cornea up to Dunedin before going to Wellington to complete discharge. Warrimoo, s.s., sails from Dunedin tomorrow for Auckland via East Coast pOTtS. Flora, s.s.,.sailed to-day for the West Coast via ports. Karori, s.s., loads timber at Orey.nouth this week for Sydney. The Wellington office of the New Zealand Shipping Company has been advised of the Hurunui's arrival at London on Wednesday week from Australian porta via Durban." The vessel sailed finally from Adelaide on August 1, calling at the South African port on the 19th. 'Fairplay,' London shipping journal, understood that the Admiralty chartered over 100 steamers for use in connection with coaling the fleet, and tho transport of men, horses, etc., to Belgium, etc. They also took several oil-tank steamers to follow the fleet. The Manchester Ship Canal Company announce that the net revenue of the whole undertaking for the six months raded June 30 last was £171,545. against £153,593 for the first half of the preseding year, being an increase of £17,952. As previously published, the gross receipts of the ship canal department were £21,650 larger. | Inquiries have been made as to whether London underwriters would entertain a proposal for raising the Empress of Ireland, but so far there seems to be absolutely no sign that they would care to | move in the matter. The whole of the insurances effected on the. liner have now been paid to the Canadian Pacific Railway, and it is highly probable that the insurance market would be. willing to j expend a large sum on the chance of raising the ship. Possibly tho owners rr.ipht be, interested in attempting to raise the hull, and the question of salving the moderate shipment of silver ivhit-h the vessel was carrying will certainly he dis- < ussed. THE FEKRY SERVICE. The Wahine, from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.55 this morning, and connected with the first express for the south. THE WARRIMOO'S PASSEXGERS. The Warrimoo, whii.-h arrived this morning from Auckland via East Coast ports, brought the following passengers : —Misses M'Farlane, Owen/M'Avery (2), Williamson, Mesdames Morris, M'Avery, Gardner, Scott, Messrs Miller, Dick, Thompson, Faulkner, Scott, Morris, Pyrke, Captain M'Donald, Smith, Brebner, Gardner, Hyde, Scott, Elphian, Master Jones; and seven steerage. AN ANCIENT MARINER. Captain John Robertson, formerlv of the Union Steam Ship Company, died at Auckland last week, aged 44 years. Deceased, who was a native of Bathgate, Scotland, was apprenticed to a prominent firm of shipowners in the Old Country, and before coming to New Zealand 14 yeaTS ago a3 chief officer of the Wellington harbor ferry steamer Duchess, he had been thKce round the world. Soon after he came to the Dominion he entered the service of the Union Company, and remained in it until four years ago, "when ha was compelled, owing to illhealth, to retire from the sea. The end came very suddenly. Deceased has left a widow (a daughter of the late Captain Galloway, of Dunedin) and a young son.
